In order to apply you need the following:
- be registered as living in Sweden
- be aged 13 or over

You can get information online on getting a National ID both from the Swedish Police (the Polisen) and from the Tax Office.

What if I only have foreign documents?
If you are from a member state in the EU, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland some of your documents may be used. The following ID documents are approved forms of identification:
- EU passport issued on or after 1 September 2006
- passports issued in Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland on or after 1 September 2006
- National ID card for EU citizens issued on or after 2 August 2021

What is the application process? Can I complete it online?
The application process has a number of steps:
- you pay the application fee in advance
- you then visit one of the offices that can issue the ID Card
- In applying for the ID card you must prove your identity.
Once you have completed the steps required, it will take around two weeks for the card to be ready. Once the ID card is ready, you will receive a letter from the Tax Agency. Save the letter and take it with you when you collect your ID card.
