What happens if my documents are not accepted to get a National ID card?

Law nº 145 dated June 27, 2011 does not say anything about it.

Internal regulation of SEGIP in article 10 states that the following may be valid documents to obtain, renew or modify the data in the RUI system:

  • Birth certificate
  • Marriage certificate
  • Death certificate.
  • SERECI certifications.
  • SERECI Administrative Resolutions.
  • Judicial Resolutions.
  • Certifications issued by Consulates, with the verification and support of the SIRENA System
  • Others that SEGIP defines through Instructions.

Do I have to be a resident of the country to get a National ID card?

Yes; you must be of Bolivian nationality to get a National ID card. As long as you are of Bolivian nationality, you can get a National ID card whether you reside in Bolivia or abroad.

If you are not of Bolivian nationality, then you can get a Foreigner Identity Card instead of a National ID Card.

Children under 12 years old and from 12 to 18 (with an administrative procedure), with a Bolivian parent may apply for a Bolivian birth certificate.
